The Rim Country Middle School Mavericks played their way last week to a trio of White Mountain League victories over the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets.
The Mavs lone loss in the four-game set was suffered by the eighth-grade football team.
In Lakeside, the Mavericks -- which fell to 1-3 with the loss -- dropped a 44-0 decision to the Jackets.
Also in Lakeside, the eighth-grade softball team (7-1) won a 7-6 thriller over the Lady Jackets.
In the softball victory, Lady Mav Sarah Cadd's RBI single in the final inning drove home Aubrey Laird from third base for the winning run.
In Payson, the seventh-grade football squad kept its record unblemished (3-0) with a 54-16 thumping of the Yellow Jackets.
The win was highlighted by the play of Steele Armstrong, Ridge Halenar and Nick Goodman who all scored TDs for the Mavs.
The bad news for the Mav gridders is that Halenar injured his wrist in a school-yard accident and might be lost for the season.
The homestanding seventh-grade softball team improved to 4-0 in action by edging Blue Ridge, 11-10
The softball showdown turned into a spectator's delight.
"This was an exciting game that had the fans and players on their feet cheering throughout the game," coach Victor Caballero said. "Our kids played hard and never gave up. They really work hard and have great attitudes."
Also this year, the seventh-graders have beaten Winslow 16-6, Show Low 10-6, and Holbrook 25-4.
All four RCMS teams returned to action yesterday against the Whiteriver Roughriders. (Results not available at press time.)
The eighth grade teams traveled to Whiteriver and the seventh-graders were in action on Payson High School fields.
The White Mountain League season wraps up for the football teams Oct. 9 against Snowflake. The seventh-grade season-ending softball tournament will be played Oct. 11 in Show Low. The eighth-grade postseason tournament schedule has not yet been finalized.
