Statewide prep team rankings are often misleading and inaccurate.
But the ratings compiled last week by arizonatrack. com that ranked the Longhorn boys cross country team the 20th best squad in Arizona were right on target.
The accuracy of the poll regarding the Longhorns was verified by the team's performance at the Doug Conley Invitational Oct. 4 at Kiwanis Park in Tempe.
Competing against the 23 best teams in the state regardless of school size classification, the Horns finished exactly where they were ranked -- in 20th place.
Payson tallied 438 points and compiled an 18:04 average time for its five runners over the 5K course.
Page, which is a member of the same 4A Grand Canyon region as Payson, took the prestigious team title with 114 points. Dust Devil runners averaged 16:65. Trailing the meet champs were Catalina Foothills (116 points; 16:64), Brophy (164; 16:70) and Mountain View Mesa (195; 17:09).
Individual honors in the impressive field went to Brophy's Charles Hampton who toured the course in 15:45.
His nearest competitor, Leif Lomeland of Page, trailed by a full 18 seconds.
For Payson, Tanner Morgan finished 47th in the 159-runner field. Brian Langeliers was one second behind his teammate in 48th place.
Joe Behrens turned in a time of 18:10 and was 91st.
Dustin Rodgers finished 120th in 18:42 and David Cluff was 132nd in 19:03.
Both the boys and girls team return to action tomorrow (Saturday) in the Thunderbird Invitational.
