Cannon Blasts His Way To First Place At Lone Tree

Julia Randall Elementary School third-grader Blake Cannon is not allowing youth and inexperience to stand in the way of a promising golf career.

The 8-year-old won first place in the boys 8-years-and-under competition at the Lone Tree Classic Oct. 11 and 12 at the Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler.

The win was Cannon's first of an aspiring career that began about two years ago when he picked up a golf club.

Last summer, he won his first medal by finishing third at a Valley youth showdown.

In winning the age/sex division championship at Lone Tree, Cannon tallied an 87 on the opening day and an 84 on the second. The 4,400-yard course is a par 71. Cannon's two-day total of 171 was seven strokes better than that of runner-up Matt Plunkett of Chandler. The third-place finisher, Miles Mikkelseon of Glendale, trailed Cannon by 17 strokes.

The tournament drew competitors from Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Mexico and one from Denmark.

The Classic is the opening tournament of 18 competitions on the Desert Junior Golf Tour. The DJGF is co-sanction by the Plantations Junior Golf Tour.

The Desert tour also hosts events in California, Nevada and New Mexico.

According to Blake's father Brent, the youngster is scheduled to play most of the upcoming tournaments on the junior tour.
