Laura Meyocks has staked claim to one of the most prestigious titles that can be earned by a Payson Women's Golf Association member.

For the next year, she will be known as the PWGA's Club Champion. Meyocks won the title by virtue of her victory in the annual championship tournament Oct. 13 and 14 at Payson Golf Course. In winning, Meyocks -- a first-time club champion -- dethroned last year's title holder, Joyce Karnes.

"Good for her. She really played well," Karnes said. All Karnes would say about her own performance was, "I finished, that's about it."

Meyocks' 36-hole low-gross tally of 167 consisted of an 82 on the first day and an 85 on the second.

In the A flight low-net scoring, Janice Burns edged Alesha Calderwood for the title. Burns finished at 148 and Calderwood turned in a 149.

Wilma Smith captured the B flight low-net crown with a 136. Carding a 148, Mary Gillilan was runner-up.

Brenda Baker (No. 17; 18 feet, 11 inches) and Dorothy Meek (No. 5; 7 feet 5 inches) were the closest-to-the-pin winners on the opening day. Joyce Karnes (No. 8; 24 feet, 7 inches) and Meek (No. 14; 2 feet, 2 inches) were prize winners on the second day.
