The Rim Country Middle School Maverick cross country teams might have set the stage for future encounters with narrow victories over the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets.
In a dual meet contested just prior to the Longhorn Invitational Sept. 3 at Payson Golf Course, the Maverick boys edged Blue Ridge 28-29. The RCMS girls gorged out a bit more breathing room in their 28-32 triumph over the Yellow Jackets.
Should the teams meet down the road, the rematch could turn into a classic battle of two longtime rival schools.
In the boys competition, Blue Ridge runners took the top two places, but it was the depth of RCMS that paved the way to the victory.
For the Mavericks, Daniel McGee was third and Steven Hilgendorf finished fourth. Mark McCarty ran his way to sixth finish only steps ahead of teammate Casey Randel.
Jeff Sokol was eighth and Cody Waterman took 10th. Other RCMS runners included Elden Sieverson (11th), Jimmy Behrens (13th) and Issac Cluff. (15th). A field of 23 runners participated.
The best showing for the Lady Mavs was turned in by runner-up Lana Cluff.
A band of five RCMS runners claimed the fifth- through ninth-place slots. They were Samantha Walsh, Shaney Lords, Maddie Nossek, Michelle Daniels and Marquel Waterman. Lucy Shouten was 11th, Mary Hagen 13th and Jordan Klabbatz 15th in the 19-runner field.
