Statewide High School Rodeo In Payson This Weekend

Rodeo athletes from around the state will be in Payson this weekend for the Arizona High School Rodeo Association's annual event.

"This is really an exciting rodeo to watch and it's free to the public," said local resident Mike Amon, who helps coordinate the Payson High School rodeo team. "We'll have 145 participants from throughout the state, including eight from Payson."

The action is scheduled to get under way at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Payson Event Center and at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

"You'll see traditional events from bareback to bull riding," Amon said. "There will be a food booth operated by the Payson Optimist Club. There's also a dance Saturday night at the rodeo grounds sponsored by the FFA from 8 p.m. to midnight."

The dance is $3 per person, or $5 per couple.

"The kids worked all year long to prepare for this season-opener," Amon said.
