It's Harvest Time, Let The Canning Begin

There are a number of people around the village who have gardens and are canning their harvest. My tomato plants have already started to turn yellow, the last two tomatoes are almost ready to pick. It seems those zucchini turn out to be the most prolific vegetable in everyone's garden. Do you have a favorite recipe for this abundant squash? E-mail me at or call me at 478-4606 with your favorite way to prepare this wonderful veggie, and I will add it to the column. I also have a great one that I use and it is great for any diet, particularly the Atkins plan. I will add it to this column next week.

One of our neighbors saw about eight to 10 neighborhood children with trash bags a few weeks ago and they were cleaning up the empty lot between Tonto Village II and III and they continued on down Mathews Lane. I want to thank those children for showing neighborhood pride. If there is someone out there who knows who they were, please call me. I will make sure they get the recognition that they deserve.

Tonto Village Fire District

The 30th annual Arizona State Fire Marshal School was held in Mesa this past week and the fire district was well represented by the fire chief, J.R. Alliger, his wife, Gloria, Irv Bossert, fire board member and resident of Thompson Draw II, Fred Aldorassi from Collins Ranch, Brent Peeples from Ellison Creek Estates, Richard Johnson from Ellison Creek Summer Homes, Phon Sutton from Bear Flat, and Red Kennedy from Mead Ranch.

The school was informative and the fire district brought back valuable information to be passed on to the people of the district. A full report will be made at the next meeting of the Fire Board this Saturday, Sept. 13. The meeting will be held at the fire station starting at 10 a.m. The auxiliary is also urged to attend this meeting, there will be a tentative accounting of the proceeds of our most successful Labor Day Bash. Chief Alliger reported that there will also be training in fire operation right after the board meeting at the fire station, starting at noon. Be ready to gear up, all you volunteer firemen.
