A pair of gifted relay teams paced the Lady Longhorns to a silver-medal finish at Payson's home-opening five-way track and field meet.

The 4x800 team of Lauren Stewart, Becca Easton, Alesha Huddlestun and Autumn Herrera won the 4x800 relay (10:38). The Flagstaff Eagle runner-up crew trailed the Lady Longhorns by almost a minute.

Lady Longhorn sprinter Amy Buckner helped lead the team to a second-place finish in Payson's track and field home opener March 30. The Lady Horns finished with 96 points. The Snowflake Lobos won the five-way meet with 116 points.

In the 4x100 relay, Amy Buckner, Krystal McRae, Shaleen Holmes and Britney Owens hooked up to win the event in 52.69.

The gold-medal efforts of the two teams helped the Lady Horns post 96 team points and finish second behind Snowflake (116). Sinagua (76) was third, Coconino (30) fourth and Flagstaff (29) trailed. The meet was held March 30 on the Longhorn's year-old all-weather track surface that was touched up with new lane striping.

In addition to the first-place finishes turned in by the relay squads, the team effort received huge boosts from event wins in the shot put, discus and long jump.

In the shot, Kody Kepp unleashed a winning throw of 32 feet, 8 1/2 inches. Hillari Hardt, the daughter of head coach Chuck Hardt, won the discus with a mark of 99 feet, 6 inches.

Britney Owens long jumped 16 feet, 4 1/2 inches to win the event.

"It was her best effort of the season," coach Hardt said.

Also in the long jump, coach Hardt also praised Tracy Fitzpatrick for her continued improvement. The sophomore standout, who is just learning the nuances of the sport, leaped 14 feet, 9 1/2 inches to finish third overall.

The coach also was impressed with the performances of Krystal McRae in the 300-meter hurdles and Stewart in the 800 meters.

McRae finished second only .4 of a second behind a Snowflake hurdler. Her ET of 48.8 "was a fast time for a new hurdler," coach Hardt said. "She keeps improving."

Stewart, only a freshman, had her finest showing of the young season finishing third (2:41.68).

The Lady Horns return to action at 3 p.m. April 8 on the PHS track against the Mogollon Mustangs.
