Longhorns Claim Silver In Home Opener

The Longhorn boys track team made its 2004 home debut March 30 against a trio of new foes representing the 4A Grand Canyon region and a longtime rival from the 3A East.

Among the trio of Grand Canyon teams that entered, Coconino (102.5) was first and Sinagua (51) fourth. The Flagstaff Eagles (21) trailed in fifth place. Snowflake, a member of the 3A East, took third with 88.5 points. Payson, a first-year member of the 4A conference, posted 91 points to stake claim to runner-up honors.

The Horns second-place finish is deceiving in that several of the most accomplished athletes did not participate.

The school record-holding 4x800 relay team of Tanner Morgan, Joe Behrens, Brian Langeliers and Dustin Rodgers was relegated to the role of spectators.

Instead of the school record holders in the 4x800, the foursome of Benny Hartnell, Jeff Little, Carlos Lopez and David Cluff represented PHS. The team ran to a runner-up finish (9:12) behind Coconino (8:45).

Payson's best showings in the 3,200 meters were turned in by Cluff (sixth; 11:51) and Lopez (seventh; 11:54). In the 800, Little was second (2:13:88) and Jonny Malloy sixth (2:25:06).

The Longhorns two gold medals in the meet were won by Mike Barr and Trent Hubbard. Barr, a senior football and basketball standout who is trying his hand at track and field, won the shot put with a heave of 45 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Hubbard tied a Flagstaff pole vaulter for top honors. Both cleared 10 feet.

The Longhorns are scheduled to host their second meet of the season April 8 against the Mogollon Mustangs. Start time for field events is 3 p.m.
