Morris Memorial Golf Tourney To Benefit Football, Scholarship

The friends of the late Jack Morris are continuing his lifelong goal of helping make the Payson High School football program the best in the state.

Among the benefits that have been scheduled in memory of the former Longhorn player and assistant coach, is the Jack Morris Memorial Payson High School Football Booster Club Golf Tournament, June 19 at Payson Golf Course.

Proceeds from the benefit will be donated to the booster club and to an annual college scholarship fund.

The booster club uses the money to purchase items that are not available in the athletic budget.

The scholarship will award a stipend to a graduating senior who is continuing his/her education. The scholarship awards will begin with the class of 2005.

The benefit tournament is sponsored by booster club member Gary Cordell of Touchdown Sales and the golf committee.

Payson High School football coach Jerry Rhoades said he appreciated Cordell for spearheading the drive to establish the memorial tournament.

"Thanks to people like Gary, the Payson Rodeo Committee, Mogollon Sporting Association, Mazatzal Casino and Steve Sachak, Payson football is a better program, Payson High is a better school and Payson is a better place to live," he said.

Morris, the Longhorns' offensive/ defensive line coach and a member of the 1986 PHS team that reached the state championship, died Feb. 23 of complications from a stroke he suffered days earlier. Morris was 34 years old at the time of his death.
