Mail carriers in Payson are preparing to deliver more than two tons of food in one day.
The U.S. Post Office and the National Association of Letter Carriers are sponsoring a nationwide food drive Saturday, May 8.
"This is probably the largest food drive in town," Payson Postmaster Kathy Almendarez said. "All the food from this effort stays right here in Payson at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank."
Residents are asked to donate non-perishable food items. Postal workers will then collect and deliver donations to the local food bank.
"People can drop off food items at the post office, or, if they live within town limits, they can leave it at their neighborhood mail boxes next Saturday morning," Almendarez said.
"Around the holidays everyone thinks about giving to those in need. But this time of year the shelves at the food bank can get pretty bare," Almendarez said.
St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank feeds an estimated 14,000 people each year.
