Columnist In Search Of A Few Good Berries

Have you noticed that the berry bushes are starting to have ripe berries on them? On my walks around the village, there is a huge bush with wonderful blackberries just starting to ripen.

In anticipation to all those plump berries ripening, I have bought new canning jars to make blackberry jam in a few weeks. Does anyone know where there is an abundance of bushes ready to pick?

Let me know, I will harvest them.

Tonto Village Chapel

Even though our village chapel is small, the hearts of the congregation are very large. The chapel managed to send four girls to a week stay at a Christian camp in Loma Linda, Calif. this summer.

Elizabeth Hall, daughter of Jeff and Darlane Leonard, Katy Watson, granddaughter of Dick and Pat Watson, and Erica Yazzi, daughter of Paul and Loretta Hunter, and Cody Nickerson, daughter of Laura Nickerson of Tonto Village were the lucky recipients of the chapel's generosity.

The next potluck luncheon will be held at the chapel around 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 8. Bring a covered dish with you and stay and enjoy your neighbors.

Tonto Village Fire District

There will be a meeting of the auxiliary at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the chapel. Plans will be discussed for the Labor Day Bash on Sept. 4 that will be co-sponsored by the Tonto Village Fire Sirens and the Christopher/ Kohl's Firebelles.

The auxiliaries are in dire need of tarps for shade. Diane Ham or I will be glad to pick them up. Call us at (928) 478-4044 or (928) 478-4575. Volunteers are needed for set-up, break-down and clean-up. Please help your fire department by helping out in any way that you can.

Our infamous "chicken drop" is in trouble. Jimmy Rabbit has lost some of his chickens to forest critters. If you know of any one who would like to give up a few of their chickens for fund-raising, it would be appreciated. Call either phone number if you can part with a few of your chickens.

Both auxiliaries are sponsoring a bake sale at 10 a.m., Aug. 20, at Christopher Creek Fire Station. On that day, there will be a big scrimmage game at Camp Tontozona with the ASU Sun Devils, so there should be many customers.

Call Carol Fulp at (928) 478-4839 by Aug. 19 to tell her what you will be donating. All auxiliary members need to be at the fire station no later than 9 a.m. for set-up.

The Tonto Village Fire Board will hold its monthly meeting Saturday, Aug. 14 at the fire station. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. Then, starting at noon, there will be a CPR class for all firemen. Chief J.R. Alliger reported that six new air bags arrived at the station this week. Funds from the FEMA Grant helped pay for this much needed equipment.

Get well, birthdays, etc.

A speedy recovery and get well wishes to Terry Luke of Thompson Draw and Mike Henick of Diamond Point Shadows. Terry is recovering from a bleeding ruptured ulcer, and Mike is recovering from complications from heart trouble. We all hope to see them around the village in record time.

Belated birthday greetings to Charlie Martin. Her birthday was July 27. Charlie is a part of the Tonto Village Dominoes group and also is known for her beautiful painted murals, such as the one she painted at Bugles, the new restaurant in Forest Lakes. Randy and Brenda Slapnicka recently renovated the restaurant and are serving some great trout along with many other delicacies such as elk burgers. Charlie also is unforgettable in her portrayal of ‘Lola Lola' in last year's "We Found Gold" melodrama.

Glen "Putsy" Shaw is another birthday on the belated side. He had his big day July 31. Putsy is known in Tonto Village as the former fire chief and he is also the past head of the fire board. He is now taking it easy and really retired now.

Happy belated birthday to you, Charlie and ‘Putsy'.

Laura Nickerson of Tonto village II, will celebrate her birthday Aug. 9. Laura is always ready to give the Tonto Village Fire Sirens a helping hand on all the fund-raisers. We sure do appreciate you, Laura. Happy Birthday.

A bit of humor for you:

You know you're in Arizona when...... you can say Hohokam and people don't think you are laughing funny.

You know you're in Arizona when.... vehicles with open windows have the right of way in the summer.
