Joyce Karnes posted a 26.5 card to win the flight A championship of a Payson Women's Golf Association tournament Aug. 3 at Payson Golf Course. Laura Meyocks took second in the flight with a 27.5.
In flight B, Judy Neal outdueled runner-up Jan Burns for the gold medal. Neal finished at 29 and Burns had a 31.
With a 27, Brenda Baker staked claim to flight C laurels. Wilma Smith's 32 was good enough for second.
Joyce Goff took first in Flight D with a 28. Carding a 30, Mary Gillilan won the silver medal. During the day, only one closest-to-pin winner, Meyocks, pocketed prize money. Her shot on No. 17 rolled to within 10 feet, 6 inches of the flag.
PWGA member Alesha Calderwood explained the "criss cross" tournament format as one in which"we used the lower score of the holes minus one-half handicap," she said. "It was 1 vs. 10, 2 vs, 11, 3 vs, 12 and so on."
