What's Up?

Q: Some time ago the paper said a traffic light was to be installed at the corner of Beeline Highway and Airport Road and the Goodyear store would have to pay for it -- granted Goodyear did not open, but Fletcher's did -- what happened? I was looking forward to a light being installed so the school children, including mine, could cross the highway to get to Payson Elementary School.

A: LaRon Garrett, public works engineer for the town, said the light at Airport Road has been discussed for four or five years and ADOT has done some traffic counts there.

"Up until last year it didn't meet the warrants," Garrett said. "Last year it finally met the warrants for ADOT to put a signal ... there was adequate traffic to justify a signal."

The Goodyear store was never tied to putting in the light, he said.

"However, we do have in this current fiscal year -- us and ADOT -- money to install that light, if we can get all the details worked out. Which means it will probably be done sometime early to mid next year. It would be sometime, I'd say, April to June 2005, if all goes well."
