Payson High School football coach Jerry Rhoades has been suspended from both his teaching and coaching responsibilities for five days.

Confidentiality laws prevent school officials from commenting about personnel matters, but Rhoades told his players at Friday afternoon's practice

that he had been suspended for chewing tobacco during practice time.

He also said the suspension would be for five days and he would not be on campus or speak with students or fellow faculty members.

In his absence, offensive coordinator Mike Loutzenheiser will assume head coaching responsibilities.

Loutzenheiser had no comment about the suspension.

Rhoades also said he had no comment.

Last season, in Payson High School's first year in the 4A conference, Rhoades led the team to an 8-2 record.

The coach will return in time for the Longhorn preseason scrimmage at 11 a.m. Aug. 21 against Peoria Centennial.
