Mav Season Begins Next Week

Rim Country Middle School athletic director Yvette Harpe has released fall schedules for the seventh- and eighth-grade football and softball teams.

In football, the two RCMS teams will play the traditional six White Mountain league games and two outside the league.

RCMS seventh-grade softball coach Vic Caballero is not doing a new jitterbug. Rather, he's showing Katie Welker the proper foot work for a throw-in from the outfield.

According to seventh-grade coach Jimmy Oestmann, in those games --ug. 26 in Cottonwood and Sept. 28 against Bradshaw Mountain on Longhorn field --he Mavericks will probably field a combined seventh- and eighth-grade team.

If WML tradition holds true, the two football teams' greatest competition for the league championship will occur Sept. 2 against Blue Ridge, Sept. 9 against Show Low and Sept. 30 against Snowflake.

Both RCMS teams had about 22 players turnout for preseason practices when they kicked off Aug. 9.

The highlight of the Lady Maverick's seventh-grade team's season will be the Lobo Invitational Oct. 2 in Snowflake. Other than the tournament, the team has six WML games on its schedule.

The eighth-graders travel Sept. 18 to a Holbrook tournament and begin WML postseason play Oct. 14. The league championship will be played Oct. 16 in Show Low.

Six regular season league games will be played.

The eighth-graders could soon be undergoing a coaching change.

Will Dunman opened the season as the head coach but is in the process of stepping down to devote more time to his pursuit of a postgraduate degree. Former Lady Longhorn softball star Molly Hunt will replace Dunman if she is approved by the school board.
