Valley Fire Put Out At 1.1 Acres

If anyone was driving along Highway 260 near milepost 263 last Friday about 2:30 p.m., you were most likely stopped because of a fire along the roadside.

The Tonto Village Fire Department, the Forest Service, Diamond Star fire Department and Christopher/Kohl's Fire Department responded to the call.

There were four fires that merged into one -- the Valley Fire. Thank goodness the fire was limited to 1.1 acres, and with the fast response of the firefighters, the blaze was quickly under control.

The fire is still under investigation, but indications seem to point to be human caused.

Plans for the big Labor Day celebration on Saturday, Sept. 4 are ongoing, everyone has been very helpful with tarps, tables, chairs, and baked goods. The Tonto Village Fire Sirens Auxiliary along with the Christopher Creek Fire Belles Auxiliary are working feverishly to make this year's fund raiser the best ever.

Call Carol Fulp at (928) 478-4839 and let her know what you will contribute to our big bake sale and cake walk.

My husband, Bill, and I went to Willow Springs Lake for the Crayfish Festival this past Sunday morning. What a surprise to see so many people there eating those pesky crayfish, including us.

This year was the first time that we have attended this event and we were really surprised how tasty those ugly looking crayfish are. They do taste like poor man's lobster.

Many families stayed to enjoy the lake and enjoy a picnic or to fish. There were vendors who were selling the traps to catch the crayfish and there were people who already had many traps in the water catching those pesky critters. It was a fine day.

Birthdays, etc.

A belated birthday wish to Phon Sutton from Bear Flat. He added another candle to his birthday cake on Aug. 17.

Chuck Stailey, a longtime resident of Tonto Village, (I think about 30 years or more) will have his big day Aug. 26.

Linda Digman of Tonto Village I will have her big day Aug. 29.

Last, but not least, Jan Davenport of Tonto Village III, will have her birthday on Aug. 31.

Happy birthday to all of you.

Pool cues

The gals took over the pool tables at the Landmark in Christopher Creek this past Tuesday evening and Kara Shaw of Tonto Village III took first place. Patti Boeschling and Michelle Grundy took second and third place.

The Sunday pool games did not get off the ground this week for lack of players. If you would like to compete next Sunday, be at the Double D by 3 p.m. to sign up.

Dominoes are still going strong on Wednesday afternoons at the Tonto Village Chapel. Play gets under way at 1 p.m. Come by and check it out.

A reminder to everyone who has a fireplace or burns a woodstove in the winter: Please get your chimney cleaned before the cold weather comes. Most fires start in the chimney and will spread to the house itself. Make arrangements now to clean the black build-up in your chimney.

The female elk are out and about with their babies in the Pine Meadow area, according to Dara Sutton of Bear Flat. She has told me that she has never seen so many babies. Dara assures me that she will try to take a picture of them, and get it to me. Of course the picture will be passed on to you to enjoy.
