Martin L. (M.L.) Kumpe Sr., 80, died Aug. 24, 2004. He was born Aug. 31, 1923 in North Little Rock, Ark., to Martin and Nola Kumpe.
In 1930, he traveled to the West spending time in Pie Town, N.M., Gisela, Ariz., and finally settling in Globe, Ariz.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.
Upon return from the military, he settled in Young, where he worked as a cowhand and truck driver and met his wife of 55 years, Christine Tallant.
They then moved to Mesa in 1963 where he worked and retired from Tonto National Forest Service after 30 years.
The couple moved to Queen Creek in 1995 to enjoy their life with family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Christine; daughter, Sally Bystricky; sons, Martin Jr. and Cecil; two grandsons, Shane Becker and Martin Kumpe III; three granddaughters, Heather Schutten, Beth Kumpe and Madeline Kumpe; five great-granddaughters, Kaley, Kelsey, Krysha, Leeann and Sabrina; and two sisters, Jean Mershon and Ruth Otto.
Graveside services were held Aug. 28 at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale.
