Payson School District students in grades two through nine are no longer required to take the dreaded Stanford 9 test.
Students now have an entire new set of state-mandated tests that make the Stanford 9 pale in comparison.
Next spring, second-graders will take reading, language arts and math tests known as the TerraNova. Those are considered Norm Referenced Tests (NRT)
which means previous tests have been given around the nation to establish a "normal." The Stanford 9 was an example of an NRT.
Students in grades three to eight take a triple hit in that they must take an AIMS dual purpose assessment in reading and mathematics, an NRT TerraNova and an AIMS extended-writing test.
Ninth grades take just the TerraNova in reading, language arts and mathematics.
Beginning next spring, sophomores take only the AIMS. Students who do not
meet the standard on any three portions of the test must retake it either the next fall or spring.
Juniors and seniors who have met the standard on a test have of option of retesting in hopes of improving their scores. Retesting may be done only in the spring.
Beginning with this year's high school junior class, students must meet the standard in reading, writing and mathematics to receive a diploma.
The Stanford 9 test fell by the wayside March 29 when the state board of education voted unanimously to award a new contract for the state's testing program to a division of McGraw Hill publishing known as CTB. The contract will include developing and administering the new AIMS testing.
Although the Stanford 9 is dead in the water, the results are in from the tests that students in grades two through nine took last spring.
In the test results, the percentile rank score means the students who took the tests did as well or better than the nationwide percentage.
For example, a student who scored in the 63rd percentile in math, did as well or better than 63 percent of the students who took the test around the nation.
The higher the percentile rank, the better the students performed.
The following are test results that compare Payson students to county and state scores.
