Columnist Gets A Taste Of Pioneer Life

I do not remember it being this cold up here. Wow. And both of my heat sources are inoperative.

Then this morning, I wake to find we have no water. I was happy to discover that it was a system problem and not frozen pipes. Fortunately, I had stowed away a few gallons of water. I wish I would remember to recycle it every month. It is an inconvenience, but I can heat water in the microwave to wash my face and wash dishes. Those pioneers had no such luxury.

This weekend is a busy one in Pine and Strawberry as Christmas activities are in full swing.

The Community Christmas Party and Christmas Tree Auction is at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, in the Cultural Hall at the Pine Community Center. All children and their families are invited.

There will be refreshments, music, the tree auction and door prizes. Santa will be there to visit with all the children. Pre-school, home-schooled, Pine-Strawberry school and visiting children and grandchildren are invited. There will be plenty of trees to bid on and lots of fun.

The Christmas Angel Auction begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, in the parking lot behind ERA Realty in Pine. This is just across from the post office. There will be a big toasty warm tent so come and enjoy the fun. The refreshments are amazing and wonderful. The silent auction ends at 7:30 p.m. and the live auction begins. Lots of wonderful items are there for your bidding enjoyment. All auction items have been donated and all proceeds help families in need in this community. Come out and support it and have a great time in the process.

Also, be sure to visit the Sweet Charity Boutique. This is new, but it will be open all year and the proceeds go into the Christmas Angel fund. This group does wonderful things for people in our communities.

The Pine-Strawberry School announces the schedule for its music programs. The winter music concert is 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec 7. The pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade Christmas program will be 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14. All are invited to attend and cheer on these children.

The Pine library invites all children to curl up in the Cozy Kid's Corner for story hour at 10 a.m., every Wednesday. Dec. 8 the library features a special story, "A Season to be Merry."

Something very special is happening this year. The members of the First Baptist Church in Pine invite all to view a beautiful display of nativity sets and crèches at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, in Westphal Hall, 4039 North Highway 87. These are the private collections of church members. Refreshments will be served and there will be ample opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors. They also extend an invitation to attend the 6 p.m. evening service beforehand.
