Tardy Parents Foil Little League Plans

Payson Little League officials are urging parents not to wait until the last minute to register their children for play.

"Late registration has always been a big problem," coach Eddie Duran said.

In an effort to avoid the problems of past years, league board members have scheduled five upcoming registration dates.

Parents are urged to register their children during one of those dates, which will make the program run smoother this spring.

All registrations will be held at the Payson Bashas' store.

The dates are:

  • Jan. 12, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Jan 15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Jan. 19, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Jan. 22, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Jan. 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The registration fee is $60 per player. Families with more than one player participating receive a discount of $5.

For those players who register on time, tryouts and the annual draft is Feb. 19 at Rumsey I. League play begins April 16 at Rumsey Park with the traditional opening ceremonies and first round of games. Action continues in the league weekdays until the regular season wraps up June. 11.

At the conclusion of the year, coaches will select all-star players to represent Payson in postseason tournaments.

This year, Payson will host the Area I, 11-12-year-old all-star tournament beginning June 25, 2005. Eight Little League organizations from around northern Arizona will participate.

Little League officials also are in need of volunteers to oversee the snack bar at Rumsey Park. If volunteers cannot be found to operate the snack bar, it could shut down or be open only on weekends.
