Aia To Honor '79 State Champions

All but two of the 16 players, coaches and managers on Payson High School's 1979 state basketball championship team are expected to be on hand when the squad is honored Feb. 28.

The ceremonies will be held during halftime of the Class 3A boys state championship game in America West Arena in Phoenix.

Payson High School athletic director Dave Bradley, the coach of the state championship team, expects the ceremony to begin between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The only players from that team who have not been located are Mike Kindred and Jody Henderson. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the two is asked to call Bradley at (928) 474-2233.

The silver anniversary events, which will also honor other state basketball championship teams, are being sponsored by the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

During the 1978-79 season, the Longhorns compiled a 20-5 mark and captured the B Central division championship with 7-1 credentials. In the state tournament, Payson opened with a 77-63 win over Antelope. In the semifinals, the Longhorns whipped the St. Johns Redskins 61-46. With the two victories, Payson entered the championship game against the Williams Vikings.

A pair of late free throws by Jeff Pettet nailed down a 49-48 victory over Williams and earned PHS its only state basketball championship.
