It took eight days of hunting for 11-year-old Clint Godac to bag his first-ever big-game animal.
But in the end, the prize was well worth the effort.
"That's the greatest Christmas present I'll ever get," Clint said after downing a trophy whitetail buck while hunting with his father Tige in Unit 22 east of Payson.
The father-and-son hunting team scoured the hunt unit for days before finally glassing the whitetail across a canyon -- just two days before Christmas.
It took the youngster several shots from almost 300 yards to down the animal. The antler rack on the buck scored 99 inches.
Clint, a fifth-grade student at Frontier Elementary School, has been drawn for four big game hunts, but the whitetail was his first success. Although he doesn't have any more big game tags to immediately fill, he says he's looking forward to his next hunting adventure.
