Apaches To Host Youth Hoop Tussle

A Tonto Apache whose passion was for basketball and coaching will soon have a youth basketball tournament played in his memory.

The Howard Burdette Sr. Memorial Middle School Co-Ed Basketball Invitational is slated for Jan. 9, 10 and 11th in the Tonto Apache gymnasium.

According to tournament director Randy Pryor, tribal members and recreation officials decided to sponsor the tournament in memory of Burdette who died about five years ago.

"Basketball and youth were his life so this is the best way to honor him," Pryor said.

The invitational has attracted nine teams from around the state including three from the Rim country. Local teams will be sponsored by Tad Neal, Jerry David and Michelle Jumper.

Pryor said he hopes to attract one additional team before the registration deadline Wednesday (tomorrow) to fill out a 10-team tournament bracket.

Pryor will announce tournament game times and team pairings tomorrow.

The entry fee is $20 per team. There is no admission for spectators.
