Florence May LeBaron Tanner Clay, died Jan. 1, 2004 with her family at her bedside. She was born May 30, 1905 in Jewett, N.M.

She comes from a long line of Arizona pioneers. Her great-grandparents settled Taylor, where she spent her early years. She was orphaned at age 9 and raised by her grandmother and aunts and uncles.

She lived in Arizona and New Mexico, where she raised her two children and traveled with her family while her husband, Milt Tanner, built many roads through both states.

In 1939, she divorced and moved with her children to California, where she lived many years before returning to Arizona in 1977. She had lived in Mesa until 2000, before moving to Tonto Basin to be closer to her family.

She loved the outdoors. You could find her in the yard, gardening and weeding and enjoying life. Her love of rocks is evident in her home and in her yard; she was a true "rock hound."
