What's Up?

Q: Will the landfill accept an old chair with a lot of metal in it?

A: Sharon Radanovich, solid waste manager for Gila County, who supervises the county landfills, said an old chair would be accepted at the Buckhead Mesa Landfill between Payson and Pine. "We charge by weight," she said, and there is a scale at the landfill. The cost is $37.51 per ton of household garbage and $44.77 per ton for other materials, including metal. So, an old chair, with a lot of metal in it would be considered "other" than household garbage, but the cost would be by the weight.

The landfill is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Radanovich said. It is closed Sunday and holidays.
