A pair of Rim Country Middle School athletes wrestled their way to weight division championships at the 2004 Sun Kids Classic Jan. 10 at Mingus High School in Cottonwood.
Mark McCarty and Steel Armstrong, both White Mountain League defending champions, finished undefeated in the tournament to win their first-ever Sun Kids titles.
Battling in the 133-pound division, McCarty -- an eighth-grader --inished with a 4-0 mark.
Armstrong, a seventh-grader, won the heavyweight crown with a 2-0 slate.
Seventh-grader Nick Goodman compiled a 4-2 record in the 125-pound division to finish fourth overall.
Daniel McGee (104) and Taylor Byers (78) advanced to consolation semifinals where they were one match from placing before being eliminated.
Seventh-grader Oshay Likens (111) also participated, but did not place.
All six of the teens were members of the Maverick wrestling team that finished fourth in the White Mountain League championship in December.
The young wrestlers will now enter the Arizona State Junior High/Middle School tournament to be held Jan. 31 in Gilbert.
McCarty enters the fray as a defending three-time fourth-place finisher. His goal this year, he said, is to win a state championship.
Former Payson High School assistant Doug Eckhardt coaches the youngsters.
