What's Up?

Q: A couple of years ago a story ran about a development in the Christopher Creek area, who was the person in charge and where does the project stand?

A: The development, SettleInn at Pine Meadows, was originally proposed in 2000 for 138 acres near Tonto Village, Thompson Draws 1 and 2 and Bear Flats. It was a project of the Landstar Group of Phoenix. In spite of protests by neighboring residents, the county approved rezoning the property to accommodate the development in July 2000 and gave the company two years to get all the required approvals to begin construction.

"They lost their funding with 9-11," said Terry Smith of the Gila County Community Development office. He said the property was sold to Jeff Blanford of City View Properties and the development is proceeding, though it has been modified. A new preliminary plat was prepared and approved a little more than a year ago and a final plat is expected to be delivered by the first part of May, Smith said.

Originally the property was to have 498 cabin sites and a variety of amenities, including a 9-hole golf course; that was reduced to 460. Smith said the new plans are for only 320 lots plus open space, but no golf course.
