The first two Little League registrations held Jan. 10 and 14 were not as successful as officials had hoped.
According to Little League President Chuck Barton, a last-minute change of the registration site from the Payson Police Department to the Best Western Payson Inn probably was the reason for the low turnout.
Barton is hoping that player registrations show a marked increase when the final registration is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24 and 31 at the Payson Inn.
Barton stresses that it is imperative all players be registered by Jan. 31 to allow officials to begin planning for the spring season.
Youngsters 7- to- 15-years-of-age (as of July 31, 2004) are eligible to participate.
When registering, players must bring their birth certificates. The fee is $40 per player. There is a discount available for families who have more than one youngster participating in the program.
At the registration, officials also will accept applications for team managers and coaches.
This season, Payson is scheduled to field teams in four age/ability leagues -- farm, minors, majors and seniors.
Last year, Payson had five farm teams, six in the majors and minors and four in the seniors.
The senior league is comprised of players 13 to 15-years-of-age. Youngsters 11-to 12-years normally play on the major league teams. The minors are open to players 9 to 12 years of age but most are either 9 or 10. Seven- and 8-year-old players participate in the farm league where coaches do the pitching.
Any player who was on a major league team last year will return to that team. Players moving up an age/skill league or new to the program must participate in tryouts.
Following the tryouts, minor, major and senior coaches draft players to their teams. The farm league does not draft.
Barton anticipates play will being in mid-April and continue into June.
