Arizona Game and Fish officers are investigating the illegal poaching of a cow elk that occurred about 10:30 p.m. Jan. 15 in Freedom Acres.

According to game officer Henry Apfel, hunters apparently shot the elk and left it for dead. The only clue officials have is that the vehicle involved in the poaching either was in need of a muffler, or had a loud exhaust system.

The elk was shot about 35 yards from a residential home and very near to where six horses were corralled.

According to Apfel, the bullet could easily have struck the home or hit one of the horses.

The illegal taking of wildlife is a violation of Arizona Revised Statutes.

Anyone who has information on the illegal killing is asked to call Operation Game Thief at (800) 352-0700. Calls are toll free and can be made 24 hours a day.
