A man who was four-wheeling on Forest Service Road 201 discovered the body of a man laying beside his vehicle Monday morning.
Gila County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the location about nine miles from Highway 87. There, they found the body of 48-year-old Thomas Pierce next to his Jeep that was stuck in the mud.
According to a GCSO press release, deputies believe Pierce was trying to get his jeep out of the mud by piling rocks and wood under the tires when he died. There were no indications of trauma to the body.
Pierce had been suffering from Multiple Sclerosis and was living with his parents in Mesa.
GCSO investigators say an autopsy will be performed and the matter is still under investigation.
