The Longhorn boys freshman basketball team took a step closer to recording an unbeaten season with a 53-30 victory over Flagstaff Coconino.
With the triumph Jan. 22 in Flagstaff, the freshman improved their record to 13-0.
Like most of the team's victories this season, Payson jumped out to an early lead and then coasted to an easy win.
Most impressive in the victory was that the freshmen's man-to-man half-court defense held the Coconino offense to single-digit scoring in each of the four quarters. In the first stanza, the Panthers scored only five points on a pair of field goals and a free throw.
Miles Huff paced the Longhorn offense with a game-high 11 points. Carlos Lopez posted one of his best offensive outings of the season, scoring 10 points. He also had three steals and two assists. The team's leading scorer on the year, Alex Bunk, contributed nine.
Bunk also cashed in on five of seven free throws and led the team in rebounding with six.
The Longhorns will continue the quest to remain unbeaten today (Friday) in Chinle. The season wraps up Feb. 3 against Flagstaff Sinagua and Feb. 4 vs. Mingus. Both games are in the old PHS gymnasium.
The finale against Mingus could be a stern test for the PHS rookies. In a Jan. 20 clash against the Marauders, the Horn plebes narrowly escaped with a 55-51 victory.
