The Northern Gila County Genealogical Society is raffling off a limited edition rifle as a tribute to Payson.
The drawing for the rifle, worth about $700, will take place at the rodeo Aug. 22. Tickets sell for $5 per ticket or $20 for 25. Tickets are available at Pollocks Gun Shop, the Chamber of Commerce and the NGCGS library at 302 E. Bonita.
Hoyt Kenmore, lifetime member of the NGCGS, said the rifle is very unique.
"It's something that can be cherished for years -- it's a collector's item," Kenmore said.
The Ruger 10/22 Rifle is one of only 26 made as a tribute to Payson and Rim country by Investment Arms, Inc. The rifle up for raffle is the proof edition, meaning that it is the first rifle made, but won't be counted with the other 25.
The rifle is engraved with messages that say "Heart of Arizona Rim Country" and "American by Birth, Patriot by Choice."
The society is operated by volunteers and is a nonprofit, non-denominational organization.
"Genealogy is the second-most popular hobby in America, next to gardening," Kenmore said. "There are many ways to use genealogy as a vehicle to become a better human being."
Kenmore said the NGCGS has doubled its operation hours since November and served three times the people in the last six months.
The NGCGS also raffles off homemade quilts, teaches seminars and hosts annual arts and crafts sales to raise funds.
