School's Start Means A Shopping Trip

LIVING

School starts next week, but before the younger set in Payson and the Rim country returns to books, bells and backpacks, families need to do some shopping.

"State law requires us to provide all the supplies," said Tonto Basin School Principal John Ketchem. "We do that here, but some individual teachers ask their students to bring special items."

Jennifer Hagen, a school volunteer, helps Joe York and his stepdaughter, Britney Davis, a senior, with registration paperwork at Payson High School.

Schools in Payson and Pine operate the same as their sister to the south. The lists of the special items students need to bring the first day of school -- Thursday, July 29 (freshman start July 28) -- are available now.

The Payson public schools all require students to bring a backpack and their name must be visible. At the middle/junior high school, it is recommended the backpacks have wheels. "Rolling backpacks are very practical," according to the official supply list for the middle school.

Another constant for just about every elementary class -- students should bring a box of tissue, Kleenex is the preferred brand. Almost every grade school class in Payson also requests students bring plastic storage bags -- sandwich to gallon size with zipper-type closures.

The schools supply pencils, paper, crayons and other items, but the following special requests have been made:
