Three Tonto Apache team members have qualified for the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships July 28 to Aug. 1 at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
The athletes --alentino Doka, Kindell Begay and Shane Levine -- will be among the field of 6,500 qualifiers from around the country.
All three qualified for the national championships by virtue of top-three finishes at the USATF Region 10 championships July 13 to 18 in Provo, Utah. Doka won midget boys division shot put competition and was third in the discus. Begay, competing with the youth girls, won the shot put and was third in the discus.
Levin advances to nationals as the shot put bronze medalist among the youth boys.
Cody Waterman (midget boys) and Hannah Quade (midget girls) also competed in the Region 10 games, but both finished fourth in the shot put and did not qualify for nationals.
The national championships also will serve as one of the selection meetings for the 2005 World Youth Championships in Marrakech, Morocco.
