Casino Proceeds Benefit Town

Payson Mayor Ken Murphy (left) recently accepted a $21,455.56 check from the Tonto Apaches. Making the presentation were Jim Gannarelli, chief executive officer of the Mazatzal Casino (center), and Shawn Morgan, a member of the Tonto Apache Council. The tribe's gaming compact requires payments to the state from casino proceeds. It also allows the tribe to contribute up to 12 percent of this payment to cities, towns and counties for specific purposes. The contribution will be divided into thirds to be used for governmental services, public safety, and the promotion of commerce and economic development.
