Basketball Camp Ends, Tourney Gets Under Way

Only a day after wrapping up the town-sponsored youth boys basketball camp, the prep summer hoop team leaps into tournament action.

Hardwood play in the annual Payson Boys Summer Invitational begins today (Friday) and wraps up tomorrow in the old Payson High School gym and Wilson Dome.

The 2004 edition of the Payson boys summer basketball camp wrapped up yesterday for about 50 aspiring players who participated. During the four days of the camp, the players worked on their shooting, passing, dribbling and defense. Coach Mike Loutzenheiser said the camp was a complete success.

Several of the teenage players, all students at PHS, will play on either the Payson I or II teams entered in the tournament. The teens helped coach the 50-plus aspiring hoopers ages 8 to 13 who participated in the youth sports camp June 7 to 10 in Wilson Dome,

In today's play, the 12 teams will battle in four flights. Red Mountain, Page and Queen Creek are aligned in Flight A. In Flight B are Mesa Mountain View, Caesar Chavez and Payson II.

The Payson II team replaces a Show Low contingent that dropped out at the last minute because the coach's wife was giving birth.

In Flight C are Shadow Mountain, Tucson Amphitheater and Fountain Hills. Phoenix North, Skyline and Payson I comprise Flight D.

The results of today's games will be used to seed the teams into a tournament tomorrow.

The championship game is at 5 p.m. in Wilson Dome. The battle for third place will be played at 3:45 p.m.

The Payson I team will play today at 10:30 a.m. (vs. Skyline), and 4:45 p.m. (vs. North) in the dome.

The Payson II squad plays at 2:15 p.m. (vs. Mountain View) and 4:45 p.m. (vs. Caesar Chavez) in the PHS gym.

There is no admission charge.
