Hoopsters Struggle In Summer Invitational

About the best thing Payson High School boys basketball coach Mike Loutzenheiser can say about his team's showing in the Payson Summer Invitational is that his crew battled some of the state's best squads.

the Payson I and II (jayvee) teams were winless in the 12-school fray June 11 and 12 in Wilson Dome and the old PHS gymnasium.

The Payson summer basketball team opened the invitational tournament June 11 and 12 in Wilson Dome with a loss to Skyline.

The Payson II team was placed in the tournament at the last minute to replace Show Low, which dropped out because the coach's wife was having a baby.

Ironically, the two Payson teams met one another in a Saturday finale.

For the game, Loutzenheiser dropped the I and II designation and divided the players into two evenly matched squads -- purple and white.

Although the Payson I team finished 0-3, it played very competitively in losses to Skyline, North and Fountain Hills.

Payson II lost to Mesa Mountain View and Caesar Chavez Friday and Queen Creek Saturday.

Mountain View captured the team title racking up a 4-0 record. Phoenix North finished 3-1 and in second place.

Page, which lost to Mountain View in the semifinals, was third with a 3-1 mark. Tucson Amphitheater took fourth with 2-2 credentials.
