Waste Management has opened a transfer station to help Payson residents and businesses get rid of their rubbish.
The transfer station is at 902 N. Chenault Parkway, off Airport Road, at the company's hauling site. It is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.
"We decided to open the transfer station to reduce costs for disposing of garbage," Don Cassano said.
Instead of hauling the waste to the county landfill, the company will take the transfer station garbage to one of two landfills it owns and operates. Cassano said the Rim country debris will go to either the Butterfield Station in the Phoenix area or a site they have in Joseph City.
Prices range from $2 per bag to $20 for a large trailer. Oversized vehicles will be weighed, Cassano said. Those carrying regular garbage will be charged $37 per ton, while those with construction or demolition debris will pay $45 per ton.
"It is open to our vehicles and residential stuff," he said. "We haven't opened it to other haulers yet."
"We've been working on this for about six months," he said.
Waste Management employs eight people in its Payson operation. The staff will be honored next week for 2,500 days without any lost-time injuries.
