Amy von Somogyi is finally back home, but not yet well enough to attend the benefit concert her friends are holding to help pay for her mounting medical expenses. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, in the Mazatzal Casino bingo hall.
Von Somogyi, 43, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia last year. Since then, she has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.
While she is currently home and in remission, she still makes regular visits to the hospital and has a long way to go.
Von Somogyi is undergoing physical therapy when she's well enough, and her medical expenses keep climbing.
Among the musicians scheduled to perform at the benefit are the Payson Jazz Trio, Steve & Jerry -- the Folksingers, Kristi Ford, the Beeliners Barbershop Quartet, Brenda Hunter, a clarinet trio (Dexter DeWitt, Teddi Flake and Ruth Schouten), a string trio (Brenda Still, Bev Savage and Evelyn Dimbat, and Patch and Hopper. A raffle for cash and gifts will also be held.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the Payson Roundup, Stockmen's Bank, PostNet, the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and at the door. For more information, call Ann Henley at (928) 472-2386 or Kris Ladau at (928) 468-8208.
The event, which will be hosted by Luann Carpino, is smoke-free.
Before she became ill, von Somogyi was actively involved in the community. As a volunteer for the Rim Country Literacy Program, she taught English as a Second Language.
