Question: Why isn't the big electronic sign over Highway 260 going into Star Valley advising of the high fire danger 24/7?
Answer: James Minton in the Arizona Department of Transportation Traffic Operations Center said the sign is not used because ADOT was asked not to use it that way by the Forest Service.
"It is only used on the weekends. The warning will go up today (Friday) and stay on through the weekend," Minton said.
Dan Eckstein, assistant fire management officer for the Payson Ranger District, said the reason the sign is used only on weekends is the Forest Service must pay for its use and with its severe budget constraints using the warning system only on weekends gets the word out to the most people.
