Both the Payson Fire Department and the Payson Ranger District responded to a fire Thursday afternoon along Highway 87. Several engines and the Tonto Helitack unit arrived to fight the flames.

A fire that broke out Thursday afternoon along Highway 87 between Oxbow Estates and Round Valley was contained at one acre.

"It was right there at the entrance to the rifle range road," Dan Eckstein, assistant fire management officer for the Payson Ranger District, said. "Apparently a wheel on a trailer was wobbling and it caused some sparks. It was partly in the median and partly on the east side of the highway."

Both the Payson Fire Department and the Payson Ranger district fought the fire.

"They responded and we had several engines, and basically the whole thing was out in probably an hour-and-a-half," Eckstein said. "It was mainly grass, a few clumps of brush, and a couple junipers."

The Tonto Helitack unit also responded, but was not needed.

"We just had them look for spots for a little bit and turned them around," Eckstein said. "They never landed. We're throwing everything at (these fires) and trying to keep them small."
