Town staff had a meeting this morning to discuss whether to have a fireworks display on the Fourth of July.
As hundreds of firefighters battle the flames of the Willow Fire at our doorstep, this is an appropriate question. As the blaze grows, there is little doubt that we would be watching the colorful sparks through the haze of smoke and a backdrop of a plume.
If town officials decide fireworks are not an appropriate way to celebrate our country's independence, we fully support that decision.
While men and women are risking their lives to battle the flames of our wildfire, perhaps it is in poor taste to shoot flaming objects into the sky.
The town can have a perfectly joyous celebration without fireworks. We can take that time to appreciate those who fought for our country's independence and those who are fighting on the front lines of the Willow Fire.
