Christine Anna Kessler Haney, 101, known to her friends as "Dena," died Feb. 22, 2004 at Payson Care Center. She was born June 1, 1902 in Freeburg Township, Ill., the daughter of Heinrich P. Kessler and Emma Kessler.
She grew up on the family farm and went to school in the Freeburg area and lived most of her years in the Freeburg/ Belleville area where she was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, St. Paul's Ladies Bible Class, The Eastern Star, White Shrine, and True Kindred Masonic orders.
She retired in 1962, a long-time employee of the W.T. Grant Company in Belleville.
She was married to August H. Baltz in 1926 at St. Louis, Mo. They had one son, Daniel F. Baltz, currently a resident of Payson.
After the death of her first husband, she was remarried in 1951 to Ralph R. Haney, a retired railroad employee. Mr. Haney died in December 1973.
Since 1991, Dena has been living in Arizona near her son Daniel, and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Baltz.
Mrs. Haney is survived by her son, Daniel, daughter-in-law, Carolyn; grandson, James August Baltz of Sunnyvale, Calif.; granddaughter, Jennifer Carol Baltz of Payson; and a large, extended family including nephews and nieces in the greater Belleville area.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and by 11 siblings, Julius, Heinrich, William, Elmer, Mary, Alma, Hilda, Bertha, Mathilda, Louise, and Clara, who died in infancy.
A memorial service was held Feb. 27.
Private burial service and interment will be at Valhalla Cemetery in Belleville.
