Richard M. Gutenberg


Richard "Rick" Michael Gutenberg, 72, of Payson, died April 29, 2004.

Born in Great Falls, Mont. June 10, 1931, Mr. Gutenberg grew up in Pocatello, Idaho and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1949.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1950 until his discharge in June 1954.

He married Patricia Mann in October 1958 in Murray, Utah.

Mr. Gutenberg joined the FAA in 1959 as an air traffic controller and moved to Longmont, Colo. in 1962 where he directed aircraft across the country for the next 26 years, until his retirement in 1985.

He enjoyed spending his days off fishing the streams and mountain lakes of Colorado.

He and his wife, Pat, moved to Arizona in 1992, settling in the mountain community of Payson in 1994. He never lost his love for flying and enjoyed watching the local planes from his deck.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters, Robyn (David) Knox, Tracey (Andy) Geavaras and Wendy Gutenberg (Todd Duncan); grandchildren, Nicole and Michael Geavaras; sister and brother-in-law, Maureen and Frank Evans; and niece, Jannene (Eric) Gunter.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 5 at Messinger Payson Funeral Home.
