Wal-Mart Warns Of Phone Scam

Rim country residents are receiving phone calls soliciting Wal-Mart and Sam's Club gift certificates and credit cards.

"We do not do business that way," Wal-Mart Community Events Coordinator Lu DeSomma said. "Neither of these are sanctioned by Wal-Mart."

The scam is an attempt to get personal information from people, according to DeSomma.

"Some of these calls appear to be coming from foreign countries," she said. "I have heard that one person gave his bank account number and they cleaned him out."

According to those who have received the calls, the solicitor offers a credit card and when people give their information to sign-up, they receive a gift certificate.

DeSomma wants to warn people that this is a scam that could lead to misuse of their personal information.

DeSomma said that Wal-Mart and Sam's Club do not solicit gift cards or credit cards over the phone.

"We at Wal-Mart are sorry that they are using us that way," DeSomma said. "Being community-minded we want to make people aware and protect our neighbors."
