May was a winning month for the Payson Roundup.
The Arizona Press Club presented its 2003 awards at ceremonies May 15, and three Roundup employees came home with awards. Reporter Jim Keyworth won the award for Community Journalist of the Year; Richard Haddad, publisher, won a first place in the portrait/personality photography category for "Kiss"; and Kelly Crowley, reporter, won a second place award for her story, "Foster mom battles Child Protective Services" in the small newspaper feature writing category.
Judge Tom Hallman said, "Jim embodies what it means to be a community journalist. A community journalist should be versatile, and Jim is that. He writes editorials, columns, news reports and features. And he serves the greater journalism community by teaching at a community college. In a business that seems to be frequently under attack, Jim is a great example of how a journalist can serve a community."
Hallman is a senior reporter for The Oregonian, specializing in writing features and narrative stories. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
"I was stunned. I want to thank Publisher Richard Haddad and Editor Jerry Thebado for giving me the space to do what I need to do," Keyworth said of the award.
Haddad's winning work was judged by the photo staff of the Tacoma News-Tribune. "Quirky, fun moment and clean background," the judges wrote in their comments.
Commenting on Crowley's story, the judge, Wooty Sixel of the Houston Chronicle, said, "This story haunted me ... The wide range of sources is impressive and the quotes are strong. It was an ambitious effort to tell a complicated story ..."
On May 7, the Arizona Newspaper Association presented the advertising and production staff with the following awards:

The Roundup competes in the category for non-daily newspapers with circulation between 3,500 to 10,000.
