Student Musicians Top Flight

On Mother's Day I was invited to the very enjoyable afternoon performance of the middle school and the high school Jazz Band at the Community Presbyterian Church as part of the Jazz in Arizona monthly concerts.

These seventh- through 12th-graders played their horns, strings and percussion instruments with exceptional talent

and professionalism. Indeed, they played so well I closed my eyes several times and could visualize anyone of them playing the beautiful standards of the 1940s and 1950s with the Big Jazz Bands. Their renditions of "Satin Doll," "My Funny Valentine," "Fly Me to The Moon," "Caravan" and many others were done with so much gusto that applause and standing ovations were spontaneous and well deserved.

Band directors Mike Buskirk of the middle school and Larry Potvin of the high school are commended for a job well done. The community and the Payson School District are both blessed to have this caliber of teachers in our local schools.

I look forward to enjoying many more of their performances.
