Teams Prep For Winter Campaign

The Payson High School basketball teams will have only three weeks to practice before they take to the hardwood to compete.

Both teams spring into action Nov. 19 in controlled scrimmages. The boys travel to Lakeside/Pinetop to take on the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets. Tipoff is 6 p.m. The Lady Horns visit Phoenix Christian for a controlled scrimmage set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

With the onset of the winter sports campaign just weeks away, soccer, wrestling and basketball players are conditioning for the rigors of their sport. Tuesday afternoon on PHS track, soccer players Martin Dorris, Patrick Karlowski, Eric Lammers, Shane Tuer and Erik Monty ran timed miles as part of their training program.

Practices began for both teams Nov. 1 with tryouts.

Although no score is kept in controlled scrimmages and individual statistics are not recorded, the games go a long way in helping coaches assess their players, settle on starting lineups and scheme player rotations.

In controlled scrimmages, no freshman or jayvee competition can be held.

The teams open the season Monday, Nov. 22 against Notre Dame Prep. The Lady Horns host Notre Dame in Wilson Dome. The Longhorns travel to the Notre Dame campus in Scottsdale.

Game times for both boys and girls are 4 p.m., freshmen; 5:30 p.m., jayvee; and 7 p.m., varsity.

The soccer and wrestling teams will have more practice time to prepare for the season. Soccer action begins Nov. 29 against Scottsdale Coronado. The Lady Horns travel to Scottsdale for a 4 p.m. game, while the boys host the Dons at 3 p.m. at Rumsey Park.

Varsity wrestling action doesn't begin until Dec. 8 at a four-way meet in Wilson Dome against Blue Ridge, Chinle and Show Low. Start time is 1 p.m.
