In a postseason voting of Grand Canyon Region coaches, Payson High School seniors Haylee Huff and Retosha Marshall have been tapped for honors.
Huff, a setter and team leader, was chosen to the GCR first team.
Marshall, who played outside hitter for the past two seasons, earned honorable mention.
Huff and Marshall were two of seven seniors who opened the season in August with high hopes of earning a Class 4A state tournament berth.
The seniors said that because they had been together all through high school, they had the experience to advance to state.
Those dreams ended Oct. 31 in Flagstaff, where the Coconino Panthers nipped the determined Lady Horns 2-1 in the opening round of the Grand Canyon regional tournament.
The loss was especially tough on the seniors who donned PHS volleyball uniforms for the final time that evening.
"The seniors went out with a bang," coach Arnold Stonebrink said. "They have no reason to hang their heads."
The team gathered Nov. 8 for the annual awards ceremony.
For Stonebrink, the loss to Coconino marked the conclusion of a rookie coaching season in which he molded a competitive team in the tough Grand Canyon Region ranks.
Next season the Lady Horns will compete in the Class 3A conference.
